    Surprise! Yet another state study finds that good school libraries can improve reading scores and test results.

    This study was in South Carolina and was conducted by well-known researcher Keith Curry Lance.

    Franz Mesmer, a German physician, was born on May 23, 1734 in Swabia.

    He had some interesting scientific theories, one of which lives on in our term "mesmerized". A recent children's book dramatizes a scientific showdown between Ben Franklin and Dr. Mesmer in France in the 1780s. Mesmerized: How Ben Franklin Solved a Mystery That Baffled All of France, by Mara Rockliff, illustrated by Iacopo Bruno, published by Candlewick in 2015, ages 6-9, 45 pp., BTSB# 761255, $19.99, good reviews by Kirkus, SLJ+, Booklist+, Bulletin and Horn Book. How Benjamin Franklin's scientific method challenged Dr. Mesmer's mysterious powers in a true moment in history.
